FISHERMAN DROWNED
COMPANION MISSING. CAUGHT IN ROUGH SEA. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., last night, When Thomas Geertson and William Samson set out in a fishing launch from Tangimoana about a mile front the mouth of the Rangitikei river early this morning, there was little wind and the sea was calm. However, it came tip rough and, at 10.30, the launch was seen vainly trying to cross the Rangitikei bar. It is presumed it met- with engine trouble, as they \v«e next seen under sail.
Two hours later the launch was seen by employees of the Forestry Department. working in the vicinity of the beach. Later the body of Geertson was found on tho beach two and a half miles from the mouth of the Rangitikei, but neither the launch or Samson has been seen, although fish boxes from the vessel were washed up late to-night.
Geertson was a widower, with a son aged 15. and for the past six years ho had followed the occupation of a fisherman, living at Tangimoana. He was the owner of the launch, which is said to have been well equipped and senworthy.
Samson was. as far as is known, single and 'about forty years of age. He was a chaff-cutting contractor in the Feeding and the S,'.union district.
