ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE.

When Edward Walls, an elderly farmed - living at Otane, re tunned to li is house Ibis morning from attending the sheep, lie discovered a young Maori ransacking his bedroom. A struggle ensued, in the course of which the Maori fired a shotgun, wounding Watts in the, leg- and arm, and a second charge entered his side. Watts was removed to the hospital suffering from severe shock as well as wounds. His assailant has disappeared, and although a strong 'posse searched the district- all day, no trace of him was discovered. NAPIER, last night.
The mysterious assailant of the farmer at Otane was caught close to Waipawa- at five o'clock to-night, and found to hi - a Maori boy named Tui Matena. He was discovered five miles from the scene of the shooting, and was taken in custody to Waipawa. A charge of attempted murder will be laid against him to-mor-row at Waipawa- or Waipukurau.
