HIGH-TENSION LINES
COST OP SAFEGUARDS POWER BOARD'S OBLIGATIONS Tho intimation that-the Wairoa Tower Board had made the private telephone line owner » gift of the necessary . amount of lead-covered pipe for carryin<r telephone wires under the high-ten-sion power lines., has been welcomed by settlers in this district, whose services will be affected by the introduction of the hydro electric power. It was stated at Wednesday's meeting that the work of reticulating the district would be undertaken with every regard for safeguarding life and property, and the Power Board's consulting "engineer, Mr. H. F. Toogood, .informed the telephone-line owners that where telephone lines had to be shifted the board would probably be prepared / to supply the labor involved, though the cost of any new material would have to be borne by the 'phone owners. As the value of the materials required for crossing under the power lines will he fairlv considerable (one estimate puts the cost of the lead-covered cable at £2O), the private-line owners are now anxious to ascertain whether they or the board will find the cost. This matter will be taken up by the Power Board's sub-committee, and a recommendation will be made to the hoard in due course.
