Tn the House of Commons, Sir Neville Chamberlain moved the Board of Guardians Default Bill to deal with extravagance at West Ham. He said it was common knowledge that some of the elections were fought upon promises of extended poor relief to those in receipt of relief acting as canvassers. The system amounted to unabashed corruption. Tn many cases relief had raised the income of a family to ICOs and 140 u weekly. West Haiii was now indebted (o the Ministry to the extent of £2.000,000. and with .rates 24s in the £ West Ham asked for a further lean of £425,OCO. The Bill enabled the Ministry to supersede the defaulting Board, and appoint peoo’e to carry out the duties. Mr. Wheatley vigorously moved- the rejection, declaring it was a partisan.; misguided measure. The Tories refused to make unemployment a national burden, throwing the maintenance .of the poor upon (he poor. The closure was applied by 3% votes to 130, and the Bill was read a second time-
