CASH ATHLETICS.
FINE PERFORMANCES, NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night. The New Zealand professional chain pionship athletic meeting commenced on the Caledonian Ground to-day in beautiful weather and before a large attendance. Some fine running was witnessed. and D. McLennan (Canterbury) added to his reputation as one of the finest runners seen in New Zealand for a long lime past. He won his heat in the 100yds in time given as 9 4-ssec, but this time must be open to doubt, a.s he wart running against a fairly brisk breeze. He won the final even more easily in 10 l-ssec. K. Cook was second and W. Pearson third. V. J. Grafton (14yds) won his heat and the final of the 220yds handicap easily. Cameron was second, and \V. A. Cubit- (14yds) third. Time, 23 2-5.
The 880vds handicap was won by C. A. Bone (12yds), with H. liscreet 2.* and W. AiV'her (35yds) 3. The time was given. as 2inin 0 4-ssee. The mile championship was run twite, as on the first occasion it was found that a lap short had been covered. FoituEortunately the three placings in the first nm were the same as in the second —J. P. Newlands 1. C. A. Bone 2, M. Archer 3. Time, 4.48 1-5. 0 B. Symon won the 440 yards chainpionship easily in 55 l-ssec. A. A. Cameron was second, and O. W. Smith 3.
W. K. Spillane (scratch), ICOft 3in. won tho 161 b hammer throw, W. Murray (scratch). 95ft 2in, being second. A. A. Cameron (scratch), 21ft 9in, won the broad jump handicap, J. Murphy (24ii ( ). 20ft llin. 2. and T. C. Lee (20in), 20ft 9in. 3. P. O'Shea and Wells were first and second in the mile cycle championship. In this event Ward. Parker, Henderson, and Mackey fell in the hist lap. Wells, who was then last, was riding through for -second place- Time, 2.33 4-5. The three-mile championship was won by O'Shea, with Wells second and Mai> kav (Christchurch) third. The vhree-mile cycle handicap (of £SO for first, second £lB, third £9. and fourth £3) wa.s won by Mackey from the 65yds mark, F. C. Ward (165yds) being second, .1. Henderson (65vds) 3. and C. R. Parker (65yds) 4. Ward (95yds) won the one mile handicap, H. W. Birch (85yds) 2, R. Parker (35yds) 3. Tho meeting will be continued tomorrow.
