Tho defeat of. Seaman Ridgway by Nelson McKnight, at Hamilton, in a recent ring battle, was marked by tho intervention of tho reforco in the third round, when Ridgway's apparent exhaustion roused fears for him. Those who saw the seaman take a daddy of a hiding from Jack Heeney at Te Karaka, and still keep his feet throughout ten rounds, may he inclined to think the intervention premature. McKnight may now be expected to get after Clarrie Blackburn or Jack Heeney.
Entries for the annual swimming championships, to be held this year at Hawke's Bay, will close on January 12, and must be endorsed by the secretary of the club to which tho entrant belongs. It is anticipated that several entries will go forward from Poverty Bay and at a meeting of the Gisboriie Surf and Swimming Club, held last evening, it was decided to instruct intending entrants from tho club membership to present their nominations to Mrs Beer, lon. secretary, for endorsement and forwarding before January 9.
A Gisbornc runner's experience in the Bay of Plenty during the Christmas reason is affording Ms friends some amusement. The local man was induced to enter for a sprint race at a picnic sports meeting, and after, some hesitation did so. Tho handicappcr fdaced him on three yards (a yard behind the limit man), and when the Poverty Bay athlete won the final by nearly twice his handicap, the organisers naturally repaired an error of omission, and enquired what previous performances ho had to his credit. Tho 440-yavds P.B. championship badge in his coat lapel should have given hi in away earlier.
