UNEXPECTED FINISH. WELLINGTON TOWN v. COUNTRY MATCH. CITY PLAYERS WIN. (Per- Press Association.! WELLINGTONJast night. The Town v. Country "match was literally packed with thrills, the City players unexpectedly defeating their opponents. So rapid was the scoring that 229 runs were recorded in 80 minutes. On the previous day Country were all out for "310 and Town had three wickets down for 209. Country went to ,the wickets again but could' only score 117. This gave them a leadl of 219 runs. Town were asked to get the runs in 105 minutes on a worn wicket, andf it seemed highly improbable, but some very vigor-, ous batting was shown. The match was won with 25 minutes to spare. Tho Country bowling was slashed to pieces. The total was scored off 18 overs, which gave an average of over 12 runs per over.
McGirr and Badcock opened for Town in the second innings and scored rapidly, adding 50 runs in 23 minutes, 70 in 30 minutes and 1 scoring 25 runs from one over. McGirr continued merrily and scored 114 before he was dismissed. In Country's second innings Hutchinson was the only one to make a stand, with 41.. Brice was deadly with the ball and took five wickets for 33 runs, Henderson two for 7 and McGirr two for 32. For Town's second' effort McGirr was top scorer with 114. followed by Barclay 49, Badcock 43, a total for four wickets of 229. AVANGANUI BEAT TARANAKI. WANGANUI, last night. Wanganui defeated Taranaki by five wickets. , Taranaki in the second innings made 110. Wanganui in the first innings scored 119, and in the second lost five wickets for 125 (Orr 601.
