FIXTUEES^RACING. December 26, 29, January 1, 2—Auckland B.C. .lan. ! and 2—Hawke's Bay J.C. Summer. January 26, 28—Wairoa B.C. Annual. Feb. 4, G—Gisbornc R.C. Slimmer. Feb. 13, 13—Poverty Bay T.G. Summer Meeting. Feb. IS—Tolaga Bay J.C. Annual. Feb. 25.—Waiapu E.G. Annual. , March. 10—Opotiki J.C. Annual TROTTING. December 28, 30, 31—Auckland T.G. December 30—Inangahua T.C. December 30—Winton T.C. January. 1, 2—Canterbury Park T.C. January 2—Westland T.C. January 5, 6—Greymoutli T.C. January 16—Wellington T.C. The Bay of Islands Racing Club, with a one-day permit, is offering £SBO in stakes for its annual meeting on January 23. *• # * ft The four-year-old Haze, who started fifth favorite for the Auckland Cup, it is interesting to note, is in-bred to Musket on the dam's side. His dam, Scotch Light, was got by Wallace (son of Carbine) from Flash, who ranks as a daughter of Enfilade (son of Musket). * * * * Ngata is not regarded lightly by the handicappers, and Mr. J. E. Henrys gave kirn 8.11 to carry in the Manawatu Cup. This placed the nine-year-old gelding on a par with Enthusiasm, and it was somewhat surprising to note that the investors had made him first favorite. * * * * Sleet, who ranked as a double winner at the Woodville spring meeting, and won the Gillies' Handicap at Palmerston North, is a three-year-old daughter of Kilbroney and is out of the Multifid mare Suowlikc. When a yearling she was bought at auction by the Featherston sportsman, Mr. C. Elgar, for 325gns. * * * * The Comedy King colt Joy King, which ran third in the Great Northern Foal Stakes on Boxing Day, is a full Vrothcr to Mimetic, and cost Mr. A. B. Williams lOOOgns. when he bought him as a yearling at Avondale. Mimetic won the Foal Stakes last year. Joy King promises to develop with age into a. very fine racehorse, and in the meantime his win in the Criterion Handicap yesterday should sweeten the interval. * # * * . Another victory was added to the credit of the marcs when Lady Cavendish won the second division of the Railway Handicap on' Boxing Day. The Railway has previously been won by Cruciform (9.0), Lady Annie (7.9), Miss Winnie (7.4), Gipsy Belle (8.1), Culprit (8,4),' Tete-a-Tote (8.7), Nanna (7.10), Tigritiya (7.10), Statuette C 7.13), Silver Link (ftO), and Parody' (6.12). The failure of The Banker in the Auckland Cup, after going out second favorite, belied the promise of his New Zealand Cup form. L. G. Morris ' horsemanship was reckoned to be a point in favor of Count Cavour, but even so it was not generally expected that the Count would bo found running Rapine to a short head, while The Banker ran with the field. Haze was in very strong favor prior to the opening" of the machine, but drifted to the position of fifth place.

Mr. H. Chiskolm, who returned to Sydney recently after a visit to England, stated that an offer of 40,000gns would not tempt Lord Derby to sell the stallion Phalnris. The Polymelus horse stands at 400gns, so that there is a lot of money in him looked at from a financial standpoint. Bui Lord Derby breeds horses himself and naturally he would prefer to hold a horse whoso worth as a sire has stood the test. Descendants of Phalaris won stakes to the value of £38,903 in England this year. * * * *

The New Zealand Derby winner Runnymede, purchased recently by Mr. T. C. Trautwein, a, well-known Sydney sportsman, is to be trained by W. Keith. In a reference to the addition of the Now Zealand gelding to the list of Australian-owned horses, the Sydney Referee' remarked:—"No matter what Runnymede may look, his form is excellent, and, in view of the strong opposition he will strike in important races in Australia, his owner deserves a good win as reward for paying a high price for him."

Many Colors must be affording Ins owner a great deal of satisfaction of late. His decisive win at Woodville, followed by a sterling performance at Awapuni, where he beat Highway in a thrilling finish, make him out a really good hurdler. Highway carried 41b more than on the occasion of his victory at Takapuna, and there seemed some doubt as to whether the Gisbornc horse could stand in the company of Sir Fanciful and Santiago. The event proved his competency, however. H * * * * In connection with the victory of Star Stranger in the Queen's Plate tit the A.R.C. summer meeting, tho sale by Mr A. J. Toxward to Mr A. B. Williams of a yearling full-brothor to Star Stranger is of interest. Mr. Williams' habit of following proved strains has been noted before. Martian, sire of Mr. Williams' new purchase, also sited Rapine, winner of th.e Auckland Cup, and the Metropolitan Handicap at tho Canterbury meeting in November, and the recognised distance champion of the Dominion.

When Clariuda led the held home in the decision of the Woodvillo Cup on the 9th inst., s'ho interrupted a fairly long string of defeats, for sho had not won a nice since she- got home first in the Autumn Handicap at Woodville last February. Clarinda was thought to have a good chance of capturing tho Great Northern Oaks at Ellershe last autumn .but to the discomfiture of a largo circle of admirers her fate was scaled a good way from tho winning post and the best she could do was to finish fourth. Her victory

in the Manawatu Cup indicates continued improvement. >i '.i * * Apart from the natural disappointment when a well-supported candidate stays at the post, keen regret must have been felt at Ellerslie on BoxingDay, when Commendation failed to move away with the field. His public form fairly entitled him to the position he held on the machine, but Lysander Avas looked upon as a rival who would thoroughly test Commendation's powers. The good finish between Lysander and Royal Te* would not compensate for the promise' of a battle royal between the first and second favorites.
