HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
The weekly meeting of the Gisborne High School Board was he'd yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs E. H. Maim (chairman), J. Kinder. A. Fordo Matthews, G. Wildish, C. Blackburn, R. Robertson, H. E. Bright, and L. T. Burma rd.
The District Engineer wrote stating, in reply to a letter from the secretary of the local board, that it would be quite possible to undertake the renovation work at the school during the vacation, hut in view of the extensive additions proposed he strongly recommended that (he renovations be held over until the. extensions be completed. He also suggested that, all renovations bo included in the one contract for thei additions. Mr Bright moved the- adoption 'of the letter, and ■also that a copy be sent down to the Department with the Board’s hearty endorsement.—Carried
The District Engineer also forwarded an estimate of the cost of the renovations, which totalled £370 8s 9d.—Received. With reference to the school memorial baths, the chairman moved that, the hoard write to Messrs Burr and Muvfield, who had done considerable preliminary work in connection with these, stating that they'were acting under the instructions of the Public Works Department.— Carried.
The Education Department wrote stating that the definition of “parent” restricts the term to either father or mother. It had been suggested that provision should be made for election by both parents as in (ho case of public schools, where both parents have a statutory right to participate in the election of the school committees. The Council of Education had approved of the proposed change. Mr. Wildish moved that the board express its approval of the change.—Carried.
The Education Committee wrote re. the proposed Education Court at the New Zealand Exhibition, .enclosing particulars of the details of the proposed court.—On the motion of Mr Bright the letter was approved. Mr, Wildish congratulated Mr. Matthews on the way in which he had had thcr levelling work in the grounds carried out, and also on the low cost of 'the work. The chairman endorsed Mr. Wildish’s remarks.
Tho statement of receipts and payments showed a credit balancei of £BO2 18s Id on July 31, and Saving Bank account £BOO, a total of £1602 i,Bs Id.
