GISBORNE DISTRICT QUARTERLY REVENUE.

SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE DURING PAST FIVE YEARS.

The revenue returns for the Gisborne District Post and Telegraph Department for the quarter ending June 30, 1924. show a substantial increase over the returns for the similar period’five years ago (June, 1919), the increase being over £IOOO. In the June quarter. 1919, the total post and telegraph revenue (shillings and pence omitted) was £9077, comprising £4344 postal revenue and £4733 telegraph ; whereas for the similar period this year the figures were : Total post and telegraph revenue, £10,153, comprising £4563 total postal revenue and £5590 total telegraph revenue. The total post and telegraph revenue for the same period 10 years ago (June, 1914). was less than that of this year, but more than that of 1919. the figures being total post and telegraph £9443. comprising £3059 total postal revenue and £6404 total telegraph revenue. It will therefore be seen that the telegraph revenue for the June quarter, 1914, was nearly £IOOO in excess of the revenue for tire corresponding period of this year. In tile postal section for this year’s June quarter the money order commission amounted to £146, postages £4291 and postal-note commission £93, In the telegraph section telegrams amounted to £2IBB, tolls £2951 and telephone exchanges £449.

Tn the same quarter a total of 3789 money orders, having an amount of £24,977, were issued and 1941, amounting to £14.117 paid. At the end of the quarter 23'savingsbanks were open in the Gisborne district, 448 accounts having been opened and 406 closed. The total number of deposits was 7358. amounting to £142,037 and the total withdrawals numbered 5262, having an amount of £135,368. Thus the excess of deposits over withdrawals totalled about £6669.
