SOCIAL PROBLEMS.
A MELBOURNE REVELATION. MELBOURNE, June 16. Giving evidence before the Commission on National Insurance, Sir Jus. Barrett condemned the baby bonus at one of the worst Acts ever introduced. It had not increased the birthrate or decreased the death rate. The money would be much better spent on maternity institutions. Referring to the prevalence of veneral disease, he said that of every hundred deaths in the Melbourne hospitals thirty were syphilitic. Quite 10 per cent, of expectant mothers were affected with the disease. He urged that the remedy was early marriage and more complete education on the disease by wide pubHcity.
