LAST NIGHT’S TELEGRAMS.

(Per Press Association.)

BLENHEIM, last night

A protest regarding the harsh dipping of s tud merino sheep at Dunedin was made by Marlborough importers and forwarded to the assistant superintendent at! Dunedin! - A reply has been received, stating that the sheep arrived at the Bluff on the Canadian Constructor, which was an unclean ship. Some of the sheep were found infected with maggots and were treated under quarantine regulations. The sheep were rightly dipped, and were carefully handled.

A recent -Arrival at Port Wair.au was the ketch Standard, which was purchased at Auckland by Mr. E. D. Eckford, on. behalf of E. Eckford and Co., for the purpose of fitting up as a suctiondredge to improve the Opawa river and the Wairau bar for navigation purposes. The vessel, which has a register of 12 tons, gross and 9 tons net, had a stormy passage of 14 days from Auckland. The vessel .is expected to bo ready for dredging pxirposes in about three weeks. Eckford and Co., who maintain a shipping trade between Blenheim and Wellington, anticipate that the dredge will effect a substantial improvement in the river, from the point! of view of navigation and indirectly from the point of view of flood relief. /
