HAITI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above committee was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Beatson (chairman), Crawshaw, Cox, Thompson, Quigley, Dobson, arid Captain Holmes. The headmaster was also in attendance. Correspondence was read from tho Education Board in reply to tho committee’s demand for much-needed additions to tho school. The Board assured them that they wero doing all they could to satisfy tho committee’s demands, but that so far they had been unable to get a grant from the Department. It was decided to make a further effort by bringing the urgency of the noed directly before the Minister of Education. The headmaster’s report showed that the average attendance for tho quarter ending June 30 had been 318 and tho average roll number was 354. He also stated that the attendance during tho past fortnight had improved, most of tho children laid up with colds having recovered. The Board’s inspectors, Messrs. Strachan and Brunton, had visited the school on June 25. The dividing curtain ,for tho infant room had arrived, the alteration to. the school boll had effected an improvement, and tho spreading of two loads of gravel had made a satisfactory path to the tool shed; the sower had _ again been causing trouble. It was decided to thank Mr. .Chrisp for his kindness in giving the pupils the prxvilego of hearing tho Empire Day speeches of the King and Queen on his gramophone. Messrs. Cox and Thompson reported that, they had visited the school, arid mentioned a few things which were in need of repair, The committee agreed to tho headmaster’s application for a grant towards the school library, whiin badly needed replenishing. Leave of absence was granted to tho caretaker for a period of two months. The work of drariin’''the back portion of tbo playground was to ho gono on with as soon as possible. Messrs. Quigley and Bickford Were appointed tho visiting committee for tho ensuing month.
