The Otago Rifle: Association meeting concluded l to-day, when the ladies’ challenge shield 1 , seven shots at 560, 500 and 600 yards, live men a-side, was won by tho Kiwi No. 2 team, which has annexed tho trophy twice in l succession; The team shot very consistently throughout tho match. Rifleman Johnston scored a brilliant 34 at 600yds, which madie lib grant! total 92, the top score'for the day. Rifleman, O. Aliller (Dunedin Riflo Club) was a. good second 1 with 91. , The inter-University debate took place to-night, the subject being “That- in the interests of university education the University of Now'Zealand l should cease to exist and tho status of separate and independent universities be given to each of the four colleges at present affiliated thereto.” The judges were Alessrs C. E--Statlhain, AI.IL, and J. B. Callan and the Rev. Hector AlacLean. ■ The results were: Victoria College (F. 11. Haig and .J. W. G. Davidson) 1, Canterbury College (ib. B. Bachelor and C. E. Beebyj 2. Haigli was adjudged 1 the best speaker. The winners took the affirmative. AUCKLAND, last night. Mr Ruddiek, Dairy Commissioner for Canada, who is a through passenger by tho Alanuka, said! that there was a marked increase in Shorthorns in Australia. Some of the stock was of very line quality. Victoria had had a good season and had not suffered, much from drought, but parts of New-South Wales and Queensland had been affected by heavy losses from the dry weather. NAPIER, last night.
