MEAT PRICES.
THE POSITION IN AUCKLAND
It is reported from Wellington, states the Auckland Star, that a “phenomenal rise” in the prices of mutton and lamb of and 4d per lb respectively had been announced by the wholesale purveyors of meat in that city, and that the Butchers’ Association, while seeking no option but to pass the increase on to the public, had resolved to protest to the Government and request it to requisition supplies necessary to keep the local markets supplied at a reasonable rate. Interviewed by a Star representative about the position in Auckland, Mr. G. F. Lanc>, president of the Auckland Master Butchers’ Association, stated that the butchers in Auckland did not deal through wholesale meat firms, but did their own buying and killing. Consequently the price was governed by the price of live stock. The prices for mutton and lamb had been fixed in January, and since then the price of sheep had advanced materially, though not phenomenally, at the February sales. At present the butchers were selling mutton at a loss, but they did not contemplate making any advance in tho prices until forthcoming sales decided whether the recent rise in the live stock was going to be maintained, or was simply a flash in the pan.
