CRICKET.

MOTUHORA DEFEATS Motfu.

The Petherbridgc Cup was advanced a further stage last week-end, when Motuhora and Motu met at Motu, Motuhora winning by nine wickets, thus securing another three-point win. Captain Derecourt won the loss, and sent Motu in to bat. They were all out for 81 runs, of which Henderson, the Motu captain, made 29, by faultless cricket. Derecourt, Clark, and Finlay son were aft bowling* well for Motuhora. Motuhora, in the first innings, made the very creditable total of 174. Derecourt and Langlands opened for Motuhora, and with 23 on the board Derecourt was clean bowled in stepping out to W. Reed. A rot then, set in, as Mackie, Clark, and Tom Scholium all went for “ducks.” Meanwhile Langlands was playing first-class cricket- Some of his strokes were a real treat to watch. With four wickets down for 32 runs things looked black for Motuhora, when Anderson and Langlands made things merry for a while, and brought the total to 74 before An-

derson lifted one into Reed’s safe hands; his 12 helped things along. Pedersen, the next man in, also did well, and with Langlands they started run stealing, which brought roars of laughter from the spectators. Langlands at this stage retired for 103, being the first century scored in the competition this season. He hit four sixes and 12 fours. Pedersen, being out for 25, the rest were now soon disposed of.

Motu, in the second innings } shaped a lot better, and all did their bit, making 118. This left Motuhora 26 runs to get for a three-point win, which they did in a few minutes, Maekie hitting 3 sixes and a single and Clark a four off Fisher’s first over. The first ball of Reed’s over proved fatal to Maekie, Reed 1 taking his middle stump. Scholium scored a single, and was then caught by F. Read. R. Thomas joined Clark, and got a single. Then ClarK, with the last ball of the over, finished the match bv hitting a sixer. The feature of the day was the bowling of the veteran cricketer in Motu, Mr. W. Reed, his well-pitched balls proving disastrous to quite a lot of cricketers. Another feature was Langland’s 103 (retired). All through his innings )ie never gave a single chance, and his .timing and cutting a ball to leg would be a masterpiece ' for even far more experienced cricketers. —Correspondent.
