The Pope was crowned at St. Peter’s. There was an impressive and splendid spectacle. (Received) February 13, 10.20 a.m.)
ROME, Feb. 12.
Tho elaborate coronation ceremonial occupied fivo hours, the Pope showing considerable fatigue towards the close. Eighty thousand people assembled at St. Peter’s. Many women fainted in the crush.
The Pope was horn© above the head's of the people on the sedia gistatoria, and received tho adoration of tho cardinals and other dignitaries. A solemn mass was celebrated. Then a tiara was placed on His Holiness’ head by Cardinal Bisletti.
After tho ceremony tho Pope proceeded to the basilica, and blessed the throng, estimated at three hundred thousand, ii: the square. (Received February 13, 12.56 p.m.)
A procession of cardinals and one hundred bishops preceded the Pop© up the principal aisle. A disappointing feature of the ceremony was th© lack of modern music. The .simple, plain chant that was u„,cd sounded melancholy and lugubrious instead of joyful and inspiriting. A most important feature was th© blessing which the Pope, surrounded by fifty-five cardinals, pave from an external balcony. The method was unprecedented since 1846.
