PLOUGHS FOLLOW THE GUNS.

FARMING BEHIND THE FRONT. The Roman plan of following the sword with the ploughshare is to-day being carried out by British soldiers on the battlefields of France. The Army Council, with the. help of the French Government and the English Board of Agriculture, are arranging to cultivate large areas of land in the war zone to grow crops for the troops in order to save freightage. There is already a Director of Agricultural Production at General Headquarters and tractor ploughs and other agricultural machinery will be used. The same scheme is being carried ont in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Salonika, and wherever the British Army is. At the home camp soldiers' allotment' gardens have been very successful and of great help to the national larder.
