HEAVY ATTACKS LAUNCHED.
FRESH GROUND GAINED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) (Reuter's Telegram.) LONDON, April 4.The Press Bureau states : — North of the Somme the position is unchanged. v. The enemy south of the Somme launched heavy attacks early this morning against the Anglo-French, and made progress on the British front in the direction of Hamel and Vaire Wood. The British beat back the attacks else • where with considerable loss. ' The fighting continues. The enemy gained ground against the French on otn* immediate right in the angle between the Luce and the Avre.
