THE NEW GENERALISSIMO.

GENERAL FOCH'S PART IN PARIS CONFERENCE. GLOWING FRENCH TRIBUTES TO "OUU GREAT LEADER." PARIS, Feb. 4. The expert French commentator, writing last night, says : — "Tlie reports made at Versailles by the generals made a very strong impression. General Foch, M, Clemenceau 's eminent collaborator, spoke with particular authority during the conferences henceforth so famous." * M. Henri Bidon, writing in the Journal, gives an exhaustive '■ study of the fine work done by General Foch, whose splendid abilities were emphasised at Versailles both by Mr. Lloyd George and Signor Orlando. All the morning papers ana full of his career to-day. Speaking of the general, M. Bidon says : — "Clearness of vision, dash, a gift for grasping the main point, are all characteristic of our great leader. To these qualities are* to be added the resourcefulness and imagination which but too often failed the Allied commanders, and without which victory is impossible. ■ ■ \ "A commander must never,* suppose that battles can be won negatively ; a good general may never be passive", for this would he a contradiction of all military history. And this diable d'homme is not of that ilk."
