PROTECTION OF SHIPPING.
STRICT GUARD OVER WHARVES
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.} i WELLESGTON, this day. ' The Defence Minister stated m the I House yesterday afternoon that, though fortunately we had beeu very free from acaidents to our ships, it had been deemed necessary by\ the naval and military authorities to lake every precaution. With j this m view, from Monday next the wharves at Wellington, Auckland, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Timaru, f Bluff, Westport, and New . Plymouth, ; at whidh overseas < slups are loading, would be entirely closed to the general public, ; and placed under military and police guard. Regulations to this effect had been issued, explained the Minister, and during such times as the wharves were closed nobody except those m possession of passes signed by authorised persons, would be allowed on jthem. Even the Commandant -himself arid Commander Hill Thomson-would not be allowed on the wharves' without passes. He explained regarding the workers on wharves, jthat the men would be passed ..through the gates by their foremen, m 'Batches as required," when they would be supplied l with discs to be returned to the sentry on the cessation of work for the day. •. ; '
