A VIGOROUS OFFENSIVE. AUSTRO GERMANS ON DEFENCE IN GALICIA. PETROGRAD, Sept. 30. ; A communique says : The enemy southeast of Oshiviany drove back the Russians somewhat. , The enemy southward of Pripet were reinforced, and repulsed the Russians at Chartoriysk, on the right bank of the Styr. Westward of Tarnapol the Russians, after terrible fighting, occupied the enemy's trenches and the fortified posi- , tion at Khooachou. Continuing a further offensive, the Russians, . after strong artillery preparation, captured the enemy's trenches eastward of Knpchintse. * AMSTERDAM, Sept. 30. German correspondents with the Austrians report that the armies have aban- > doned the offensive on the Vohynian triangle m order to resist General Ivanoff's tremendous counter-offensive, which is designed to penetrate the AustrqHungarian positions at Volyhynia and Brody. . Herr Moraht, writing m the Berliner Tageblatt, points out tzho serious situation of General Mackensen's army, an,d says the Austro-German front m eastern Galicia and north-west Volhynia ia limited for the moment to defence.
