HOTEL LICENSES.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, i^t night. At the annual meeting of -the Licensing Committee to-day all the licenses except one (on the ground that the house concerned was not kept iip to the required standard) were granted. In the case of the Duke of Edinburgh, and Wellington hotels, the police reported 'that the premises were frequented and used by bookmakers. These reports, however, were not put in as objections, and the Bench renewed the licenses after issuing a warning to all licensees that they were expected to see that no betting took place on their premises. Dr. McArthur, S.M. (chairman of the Committee) said the Bench would like licensees to understand that their position was that they must use their very best endeavors to keep their houses a*br solutely clear of those who indulged in betting. They must not only look after the matter in a casual or. haphazard manner, but they must be in earnest in looking after the house if they desired to keep the house clean. The Bench was not likely to interfere with licensees who carried out tlieir business in an upright and honest manner. They knew that sometimes undesirable people got into their houses without their knowledge, but. they must keep their eyes open and see that their houses were not ufed bv people who probably were afraid to carry out their operations on ♦Tie street and took shelter in an hotel. The Bench had no desire to be hard upon them, but at the same time the ! Bench -wished licensees to remember that they must be active in keeping their houses clear of such people.
