In regard to the decision of Messrs Williams and Kettle 4o., have- the. alley, ways, at the saleyards -metalled, it is _n- : teresting to note that the contract price for doing the work with Puha or Te Karaka gravel is lower than it would be if Gentle Annie drippings were used. There are very large beds of metal in the Waipaoa river hetween Mr Ensor'^s house and Te Karaka, and the material obtainable is of much better quality that that which is found : further down the river, and, though not sufficiently hard to stand really heavy traffic, it makes -an excellent surface on roatls which are required for light traffic only. A car coming from the direction of Ormond had evidently collided with the bridge railing, for the guard rail is cracked through and the railings splintered. One post has been carried clean away, and two wing posts have been driven considerably out of plumb. Several fragments of glass ore lying around, and the impact must liave been severe. Had the collision occurred further towards the centre of the bridge, the car must have gone into the creek. There was very little rain here during May, the total fall being only I.42ini, and as a consequence some householders were short of water. Rain commenced to fall this morning, however, and there are indications of a heavy downpour. Wells which ran dry in the summer am still without water ,^ and the ground requires a good soaking. Mr Peacocke's new hall is nearly finished, and it is understood that a military ball is to be given to celebrate the opening. -
