THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
(Per Press Association.) C> CHRISTCHURGJH, last night. Ari emergency meeting of the committee of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was held yesterday. The chairman, stated fchat the meeting had been called for the purpose of considering what action should be taken m regard to the position m which the railway* employes had been placed through the attitude of the Minister of Railways m vetoing the finding of the South Island Appeal Board m the case of a train, examiner who appealed against his reduction from a higher to a lower grade. A copy of the decision, which had been unanimously agreed to by the members of the Board, and a copy of the letter received from the General Manager of Railways, stating that the Minister, .after careful consideration, could not see his way to give efiect to the Board's finding, were read.. After a long discussion, during which it was stated that the intention of Parliament was being deliberately set aside, it was resolved to forward: copies of the Board's finding and the Minister's decision to the senior member of Parliament for Canterbury, with a request that he should convene a meeting of all members of Parliament interested m railway matters, with the view of having the whole question re : viewed by them.. It was also resolved to request the general Society to cooperate with the branch. . WESTPORT, this day. * The Westport branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants is agitating for a grant for a half-holiday for surfacemen. The movement is receiving very general support from branches of the society throughout the Dominion. The executive has laid the matter before the Minister for Railways.
