LICENSING COMMITTEES.
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night. At the annual meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Committee to-day, eight applications for publicans? licenses for the following hotels were Tefused 1 : Adelaide (Colin Campbell), Caledonian (J. Race), Scotia (J. J. Roughan), Douglas ,(J. Geddes), Shades (J. Barclay), Duke of Edinburgh <D. McKenfcie), Great Northern (J. Toomey), and Queen's (J. Crane). The following six applications are under consideration: Central (Haydon), Gladstone 1 (Collins), Wain's (Binstead), Prince of Wales (Gray), Royal Albert (McGavin), and Rainbow (Gleeson). It is urideistood that two of these applications will be xefusel. Applications for bottle licenses will be taken on Wednesday. All applications for wholesale licenses and an application for a packet' license for the s.s. Manuka were gKUI : TIMARU, last night. The annual meeting of the 'Limaru Licensing Committee was held to-day. The policeNreport was favorable m all cases except three, wherein ancient -wooden buildings were reported out of date, with fire escapes of knotted rope, deemed! to be inadequate. One of these, the Hibernian hotel, is m town ; the other two are m the country- , rhes^ three applications were adjourned, all other licenses being granted. INVERGARGILL, last nightAt the annrffl meeting of the Awarua Licensing Committee to-day, all applications for renewal but one were granted, and that one was adjourned pending the completion of -rebuilding. An ap^Jjoa^ tipn for a license for the old Waikiwt hotel,' which is not far over the border of the jjo-Keenae area, was refused, after argUmfi^^yELLINGTON, last night. • The executive of the New Zealand Alliance to-day resolved': '"That this meeting enters'a strong protest against the granting of wholesale licenses for the sale of liquor m. the King Country. It regards such action as a gross violation of the compact made by the Government with the Maori chiefs of the King Country, namely, that the sale of liquor should be prohibited throughout the district. Aa these" .licenses were granted on the deliberate and casting vote of the presiding magistrate against the majority of the elected members, this executive resolves to bring the matter under the notice of the AttorneyGeneral, as it is clearly, a breach of the spirit! and intention of the Government proclamation." ,^-mt—
