HOSPITAL TRUSTEES.
■ ♦ The monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees was held this afternoon, there being present : Messrs Nolan (chairman), Harding, Wallis, Tuohy, Macfarlane, Joyce, Dewing and JohnstonA letter from Mr Stratcon on behalf of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, asking whether the Trustees issued tickets entitling to admittance to the hospital was replied to, stating that such tickets were not issued, and intimating the local terms. The South Canterbury Hospital Board wrote asking for information as to the hospital and staff. — Received. The secretary stated that a sum of about £10 was expected from the Kaiti hall fund. . SEPTIC TANK. Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer, wrote m reply to a letter from the Trustees, and stated 1 that Ashburton Hospital had put m a septic tank, and that the Wellington Hospital Board vvere putting m one at Otaki m connection with, the hospital there. He thought it would be wise to continue the work of cremating the stools from fever patients. Dr. Mason answered a series of questions put to him m regard to the working of septic tanks, and stated one should be built to contain 24 hours' sewage. He advised that an aerating or filter bed should be laid down, and with this there was no objection to the effluent being discharged into the river either at high or low water TREASURER'S REPORT. The treasurer's monthly report showed the receipts to be :— Patients' fees £16 Is, subscriptions and donations £7 14s, rent £4 11s, bank balance to credit £479 3s 2d, total £507 9s 2d. The disbursements were : Accounts passed June 18th £73 lls 3d, salaries and wages (June 30th) £44 14s Bd. Bank balance to credit July 16th £389 3s 3d. Accounts presented herewith £223 3s 9d.— The report was adopted. The Visiting Committee reported through Mr Wallis that the drain from the hospital was running out above highwater mark, which obviously was not right, and the pipe, owing to its large size, was partly blocked. The matron asked that water should be laid on to the mortuary, likewise gas, which had been done. Regarding the drainage, a septic tank was necessary^ but if the borough were going m for water and drainage it was not for the hospital to incur, the expense of putting m a septic tank, and thus pay for it twice over.— The Chairman thought something should be done to the drainage, and the system put on a proper footing.— Mr Macfarlane proposed that a committee, consisting of the Chairman, Messrs Harding, Wallis and the mover, be a committee to formulate a scheme to be considered next meet-, ing. As Mr Wallis had pointed out, the size of the hospital pipe, 9in, was not necessary, as it could not be flushed. — Mr Dewing pointed out that by putting m the septic tank they would be doing the thing twice over if the borough got drainage algo. ■ It might pay if they could have the use of the tank for the next four years, as it would be that time no doubt before the water and drainage was , obtained. — Mr Tuohy seconded Mr Macfarlane's motion, which was carried. s — The Chairman said it would cost a good deal to take up the present drains. — Mr Wallis said it was absurd the way the drains had been laid. — Mr Dewing was added to the committee.
