And, as one who lost a day's work through the mistake, I think the master builders to blame as well, as they ought to have been better informed as to what the holidays were, and the dates they fall on." Mr James Dods, late of Pouawa, writes us from East Lothian, Scotland :— "Sir, — I think the following will surprise some of my old friends m Poverty Bay. A gentleman m this neighborhood took me one day last week to see his sheep. His ewes were all of the Leicester breed, and he had 220 per cent, of lambs. He had no deaths, except one ewe. There were no single lambs, so a number of them had three and some four, and they were all alive. He was grazing four sheep and eight lambs per acre, and they can't have been starved, as he told me -yesterday he had sold the first portion of the lambs at 36s each. His feelings when his counsel sat down and virtually abandoned his case, after hearing the evidence for the prosecution, may be better imagined than described. The sentence of imprisonment which followed was pretty stiff, but it was mild m comparison to the speech from the Bench which accompanied it. To be stigmatised as an "iniquitous skunk" and a "blood-sucker" before a room full of people, and not be able to say a word m retaliation, would have been the hardest part of the punishment to many men. The sly-grog sellers m the King Country have been having a bad tune of it at Mr Northcroft's hands lately.
