A special committee just appointed by the City Council has been set the difficult duty of grappling with the problem of housing the people in Wellington. Cr McLaren said he knew of one instance where nine persons lived in one room at Thorndoi). He found that thtunen working upon the wharf spent from one-third to one-fourth of their earnings in rent. Although he was told that there were no slums in the city, there were many localities in which there were slum dwellings. He had known of instances of two families living in one room, and of three families occupying one small house. High ■Vents were no doubt one cause of this- state of things. One had to consider the circumstances of the children brought up under these ■ conditions. '
