GISBORNE-ORMOND RAILWAY.

PASSENGER FARES.

Preparations for the opening day this week are proceeding smoothly and steadily. This morning a party consisting of Messrs. Vickerman (<tf the Public Works Department), Koch (District Engineer), Court (railway inspector), and Armstrong (engineer in charge of the line) went out to Orinond for the purpose of inspecting the railway before the formal handing from the Public Works to the Railway Department is completed. Following the timetable..published on Saturday evening, wu give the fares from Gisbornfi ito Ormond, a-kid vice versa., including the various stations between these places. These particulars (kindly supplied by Mr Baxter, of the Traffic Department), Bhow only the ordinary passenger fares. Excursion rates will of course be much lower, and tbere is no' doubt that future meetings at the Park and Makaraka racecourses, and any country gatherings' along the' route, will greatly benefit by the . cheap and , commodious means of access afforded. For the smallest silver coin, townspeople, desirous of attending the-Show on the "People's Day" may depend on being landed at the Park in a few minutes. Numerous other benefits present themselves, but it is sufficient to remark that now the inestimable boon of a railway has been obtained, the residents of the district should show their sense of the favor conferred on them by patronising it as is in their power to do. It is the intention of the railway officials to make arrangements with the promoters of'gatherings at the Park whereby passenger* may obtain a ticket at the station which will carry them into the ground, thus saving the further trouble and time of purchasing passes at the gates. This plan is in operation in other places, and works satisfactorily. The scale of ordinary fares is as follows:—
