SHEEP OF THE DISTRICT.
The annual sheep returns compiled for the year ended April 30. J899, have just been published, and afford much information as to the flocks of the district.
Tho total number of sheep in Cook County was 824,129, and in Waiapu County 308,649, making a total of 1,132,778 for the whole district. The increases on the previous year were 22,338 in Waiapu and 13,168 in Cook County.
An analysis of the returns shows the different classes of sheep, of which the flocks are composed. Of merinos, there are in the two counties only six stud rams, 93 flock rams, 163 breed-
ing ewes, 15 dry ewes, and 50 lambs. Lincolns : 304 stud rams, 8411 flock rams, 6129 breeding ewes, 562 dry ewes, and 4089 rams. Romneys : 75 stud rams, 4697 flock rams, 2894 breeding ewes, 2205 lambs. Border Leicesters : One stud ram, 1 58 flock rams, 72 ewes English Leicester*: 61 stud rams, 140 flock rams, 40 dry ewes. Shropshires : 40 flock rams. Soulhdowns : 20 stud rams. Other breeds : 284 flock rams, 1405 ewes. Flock sheep : Crossbreda and other longwools, not atuds, 226,575 wethers, 2-tooth and over ; 487,022 breeding ewes, 61,844 dry ewes, 322,658 lambs. Merino : 1697 wethers, 465 ewes, 66 dry ewes, 163 lambs.
There ars 115 owners of sheep in VVaiapu County, and 387 in Cook. In the two counties there are 12 person's who own over 20,000 sheep, 14 who own between 10,000 and 20,000, 10 between 7500 and 10,000, 23 between 5000 and 7500, 43 between 2500 and 5000, 83 between 1000 and 2500, 310 under 1000, 240 under 500, and 140 under 200. The holders of over 10,000 sheep are : W. Busby, Tokomaru, 19,500;. E. Murphy, Waiau, 12,500; Somervell Brothers, Waipiro, 13,240 ; White and Brown, Tokomaru. 11,518 j A. B. Kenway, Waimata, 10,445 ; Jas. Macfarlane, 21,791 ; A. McLean, 10,126 ; Muir, Ymhj, and Co., Whatatutu, 24,600; E. Murphy, Kairaki, 10,840; Jas. Orr, Rangatira, 20,190; C.
