THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

Christchurch, to-day.

A letter has been addressed by Mr Robert Wilson, engineer-in-chief and General Manager and secretary of the Midland Railway Company to Mr Gully, Crown Solicitor, Wellington stating, in response to a request to forward any plans and specifications in hia possession, that these are the result of the appointment and work of persons selected specially for their professional skill in such matters, and therefore valuable property of the company and that it could not be expected that he (WilBon) would part with them without the authority of his directors. Mr Wilson writes to the Governor stating that the Act of taking possession and assuming the management of the Railway is one which the company protest against as being oppressive, improper and unjust. The company, he declares, have not been guilty of any " wilful breach " of contract. In the meantime the company necessarily submits, but under protest, to the control imposed upon the company by the executive step which cannot but rebound to the discredit and damage of the colony.

After the outdoor service last night, a number of young men attended Wesley Church, in response to the invitation by advertisement of the Rev. W. L. Salter. AC tho close of the service, while referring to Tuesday's tea, regret was expressed that the arrangements had been made for the same evening as that arranged tor the reception of the Anglican Bishop of Waiapu.

A private telegram, received this morning from the Hon J. Carroll, who is at Rotorua, etates that Te Whaiti was reached on Friday.,
