MURDER IN A BANK
— _ * BURGLAR USES A TOMAHAWK. MANAGER AND LADY BUTCHERED. Sydney, Sept. 2-4. — A burglar entered the City Bank at Carcoar this morning and surprised the manager, Mr Phillips, whom he attacked with a tomahawk. Mrs Phillips and Miss Cavanagh rushed to the rescue. A bloody struggle ensued. The robber laid out right and left, instantly killing Mr Phillips and Miss Cavanagh. Mrs Phillips and child were seriously wounded. The robber then escaped. Searoh parties are scouring the district without success, though tho murderer is believed to be known. The Joint Stock Bank at Wickham, near Newcastle, was also entered lasb night. The clerk, Charles Hart, while visiting the bank at 10 o'clock was bound hand and foot and gagged, but the robbers failed to secure any money and escaped. Sept. 23.— Further particulars concerning the tragedy at Carcoar City Bank shows that Phillips was terribly hacked about, there Icing eight wounds on tho body. Miss Cavanagh's throat was cut. There were two other females in the building, but by means of threats the robber terrified them into silence. Phillips intended to leave for Young on Monday to take the managership of the bank there. Miss Cavanagh had arrived from Sydney only a few hours before the tragedy happened. The murderers, in order to eftect their escape from the township, stole horses belonging to a clergyman and other townspeople. The police and vigilance committees are still in pursuit.
