County Council.

The regular monthly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers this afternoon, there being present— Messrs Gray (Chairman), Clark, Hepburn, Dormer, Orr, Wethered, and Murphy. Mr Trimmer wrote stating that certain repairs were necessary to the Tolago Bay ferry to make it workable, and offering to do the repairs for the sum of £30. — The overseer stated that the repairs mentioned were quite necessary. The punt leaked a good deal when loaded. The matter was allowed to stand over until the overseer has inspected the ferry. Mr J. MacFarlane wrote forwarding a claim of £1 6s 6d for damages to his buggy caused by a bog on the Tolago road. — The Council decided not to entertain the claim. Mr Perry wrote calling the Council's attention to the bad state of the road between Arikihi and Tolago, and requesting that the necessary repairs be made as early as possible. — The matter was allowed to stand over, as the Council has no funds to spare to spend on this road. The Patutahi Road Board wrote enclosing a copy of a resolntiou passed by that Board re closing the road to the quarry during a certain period of the year.— Letter received. TENDERS. For metalling Tolago Bay hill road : R. Knox, £2 8s o*d and £2 ; S. Doleman (accepted) £2 7s 6d per chain. For collecting Dog Tax : H. Currie and Mellsopp £15], G. VV. Warren £110, C. Lewis £115, R. Thelwall £120.— 1n reference to collecting this tax the road overseer (Mr Currie) wrote asking the Council to hand over the collecting of the tax to him, for which privilege he made an offer of £20, and agreed to forego his present salary. He drew the Council's attention to the fact that after paying expenses in connection with his present work he had but 25s per week left out of his salary for his own and three horses' keep. — Cr Orr proposed that Currie and MeLsopp's tender be accepted, subject to an alteration in a clause of the tender. — Cr Murphy proposed that the Overseer's offer bo accepted ; Mr Hepburn seconded. The amendment was negatived, only Messrs Murphy and Hepburn voting for it. The motion of Cr Orr was then carried. For metalling Lavenham road : R. Knox (accepted) £1 12s 2d per chain, Griffon £2 2s, \f. Jones £1 19s Bd, Hickey £2 Is, O'Donnell £1 19s, Doleman £2 4s. " The Overseer reported as follows :— Re timber required for repairing bridges on the Wairoa Road, I have had an offer to supply all required, delivered at 24s per hundred, and I think I oould get it for less, which would be a saving of at least 4s per hundred on timber taken from Gisborne. Several bridges must be repaired before the winter, and I would again advise using totara instead of kauri. Estimate form >tion about 40 chains and 15yds gravel per chain at £80, and 18 chains of gravelling cuttings at 12 yards per chain at £22 10s. On the Waikakau road five box culverts £10. As no tenders came in for repairing bridges at Mr Woodbine Johnson's, I arranged with B. Higgins to do the work for £4 10s, but for want of timber the work has not been done. Regarding the slaughter houses at Wae-renga-a-hika I found Hyland killing in a new house on the first road on the other side of Waerenga-a-hika, and Cooper uses the old slaughter house. — In the Tolago riding the road between Pakarae and Poutae requires about 200 yards of gravel for repairing the road, also 100 chains or more of formation and drain on the road leading to Arikihi from Tolago should be done.— lt was agreed that the Overseer estimate the quantity of timber required, so that tenders might be called early next month.— Mr Murphy proposed that the tenders for the Coast road works should be called for as early as possible, as the sooner the work was under way the better.— Mr Orr thought that the totara timber referred to might be used in place of the kauri.

The Clerk reported that with the exception of about £600 the whole of the rates had been collected.
