Gale, Prcsidont of the Chamber of Commerce, has written to Mr Sedd.cn protesting against the abandonment of tho representation of the colony at tho Chicago Exhibition, and asking tho Government to persevere with it before too late. The Minister replied that Parliament havinc dealt with the question after full consideration, the Government are unable to take any further action in the matter. Tho Boot Trade Conference resolved to-day to hold an open conference for all persons engaged in the trade, whether employers or employees, nt Christen ureh three weeks hence, for the purpose of discussing the " statement" submitted by he employees, which involves an increase upon the present schedule of prices. Moeller's corpse has a wound on the forehead, which it ia thought may have been caused by the propeller, or by the body being thrown upon the rocks. It was blowing freshly at the time, and the water was lumpy. Moeller's forgeries were numerous, and nearly all the Loan Companies in town have suffered, though not for large amounts. It is believed he had a confederate, as the writing on the forged notes is in two different hands, one being of a good bold style, whereas tho others were not good writing. Arrived: Copfic from London, via way ports, after an uneventful passage Before coming alongside the wharf she was inspected and passed by the health officer. AUCKLAND, Today. An important Native land case is before the Court. Mere, a daughter of tho late chief Paora Tuhaere, claims certain portions of the Oraki block, near Auckland. The block is valued at L 50,000. Two of Paul's nephews dispute tho claim. The statement of Hudson Williamson, late Crown Prosecutor, shows liabilities L 1620, assets L 65. Tho debtor's troubles began in 1886, after becoming involved in a business matter with a client who shortly afterwards left the colony. The creditors have resolved to facilitate his discharge. A Gre discovered at five o'clock this morning on the ship Timaru, lying in the stream, was subdued after several hours hard work by the ship's crew, and a party from tho steamer Rangatira. The fire broke out in the charcoal insulated compartment, above the frozen meat hold, and under the flooring of the oil room on the main deck. It is believed that it was due to spontaneous combustion of the oil and charcoal, the oil saturating the floor of the oil-room, and penetrating the planking to the charcoal. When discovered by the cook, who gave the alarm, on opening up the hatches, dense volumes of smoke issued from tho hold, and it was found that the fire had dropped down from the insulator to a quantity of cement stored in casks in the bottom of the ship. The fire ignited the casks, and burnt about five hundred of them. Water was freely poured on the burning mass by the donkey engine and a portable engine, and aided by buckets the fire was quenched about eight o'clock. Capt. Fulhirton, the master, states that the fumes from the charcoal burning were suffocating. He required to wear a respirator before examining the seat of the fire. The damage consists of some decking being burnt, and portions of the charcoal and coal compartment are destroyed. About five hundred casks of cement have been destroyed by fire and water. The cement was on board on the ship's account since the vessel arrived here from London last April. The Tinsaru is one of Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's refrigerating ships, and has been lying in the harbor awaiting the opening of the frozen meat season, when she goes south to load for London The damage to the ship is but slight, and will soon bo repaired. DUNEDIN, To-day. A man named James Reid fell off a rock near Lawyer's Head and was carried out to flea, but was gallantly rescued by Gunner Good, of the Permanent Artillery. CHRISTCHURCII, To-day. At a meeting of delegates from Friendly Societies, it was decided to form an association for the purpose of medical arid other benefits throughout the colony.
