Pugilism in America.
SULLIVAN AND CORBETT. SULLIVAN KNOCKED OUT. The following cablegram, dated London, September 8, is published in the Sydney Morning Herald : — " The tight bjtween John L. Sullivan nnd Jim Corbett f«>r L 9.000 took place at New Orleans yesterday. Corbett had all the better of the fight, and knocked Sullivau out in 21 rounds. The betting was 6 to 4 on Sullivan, who fought with great pluck and determination. Corbett, however, proved the more clever of the two, and had the better of almost every round. He wore Sullivan down, and knocked him out in the 2ist round. The fight lasted 78 minutes. Corbett foughfc with great caution for four rounds, and dodged Sullivan round the ring, trying to tire him out. In the j fifth round heavy fighting took place, Corbett landed six times on Sullivan's face without return. In the eleventh round Sullivan landed two heavy blows, and Corbett, aroused, drove Sullivan round the ring. Sul'ivan fought viciously, but with slow blows, short and erratic. In the seventeenth round Sullivan knocked Corbett down with a low body blow. Heavy fighting followed, and the round finished in favor of Sulli«an. Both wore cautious in the next round. Corbett was very cool, and repeatedly lauded heavy blows on Sullivan, who was nearly out ac the end of the 20th round. Directly the 21st round commenced, Corbett landed his opponent heavily on the jaw. Sullivan fell, but rose after six seconds. Corbeit then immediately delivered a tremendous punch on the side of Sullivan's head, knocking him out. Sullivan tried to rise but was too weak. Sullivan weighed 2161 b., and Cgrbett 1881 b.
