[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, To-day. At the chess contest Seidberg beats Jowitt, Barnes beat Trimble, llookham beat Bakowell, and Littlejohn beat Ashton. Barnes beat Hookham, Ash ton beat Malcolm, and Bakewell beat Jowitt. At the Chess Congress at noon Siedberg had beaten Trimble, giving the former a total of 4l£ wins. Joseph Newman, aged 77 years, a share broker and once a member of the Provincial Council, and for & short time a member for Franklin in the House of Representatives, died to-day from injuries received last September, by a blow on the head from a falling signboard. WESTPORT To-day. The Governor visited here on Saturday. i He was entertained, and left for Kumara yesterday. WANGANUI, To-day. A great native meeting at Parikino commences to-day, there being over 2,000 Maoris present from all parts of the island, when Major Kemp and Te Kooti meet for discussion of matters momentous to the Native race.
