Apropos of the clerical degrees in America, here is a story from the PanMethodist Conference omitted by "our special correspondent." One of the English delegates was the Rev. Hugh Prico Hughes, M.A. The committee who had arranged his preaching itinerary were inclined to make the most of this gentleman's academical degree, and whithersoever he went the full title, "The Rev. Hugh Prico Hughes, M.A." flaunted on chapel doors, and gave an air of dignity to the small bills circulated among the congregation. One day it fell to the lot of adeacon in a rustic parish to announce the approach of the celebrated London rlivine. "On Sunday next," he said, L-arefully scanning the written announcement with which he had been provided, 11 tho Rev. Hugh Price Hughes' Ma will occupy the pulpit in this church, and," he *dded, looking cheerfully and hopefully round the congregation, "we have no foubt the old lady will give us a telling Jisconrse." A private letter from Melbourne received at Carterton contains the following reliablo information : --" The representa;ive of the British iusurauce company, who is at present in Melbourne, informed ne that his office h*s over L 250.000 invested in New Zealand on mortgage, and hat positive instructions have been sent i :o their agents to withdraw every penny )f it as fast as their engagements expire, i Phis is owing to the taxation proposals of he Government."
