Mr Bruce Smith has replaced Mr McMillan as Treasurer, and Mr Young, who was formerly Speaker of the Lower House, takes Mr Smith's place as Minister for Public Works. The Estimate shows that when tho sixpenny postal rate to England was in force the loss on the federal mail service was L 563, whereas this year under the 2£d rate it is expected that the loss will be L 12,725. Aug. 15. The House has empowered the Government to issue close on a million worth of Treasury Bills. HOBART, Aug. 15. The British Bank, a small financial institution, has closed hore and at Launceston. The reason assigned is snmllucss of capital, L100,C30, - which represents tho entire deposits. THURSDAY ISLAND, Aug. 14. The steamer Deddington, laden with coal from Newcastle to Sourabaya, in Java, has gone ashore on Sherrard Island. She ia in a dangerous position if bad weather comes on.
