News from Tasmania includes intelligence of a remarkably lucky " find " of ambergris made recently by a Hobart fisherman. The Hobart whaling barque Waterwitch returned to Hobarfc recently after an extended whaling cruise off the Tasmanian coasb, and jusfc outside port had "tied out" an oighb-fcun whale, a spermaceti, and then cast it adrift after obtaining the oil. A colored fisherman named Louis Smith, who had his weather eye open, took the whalo in tow to Recherche, and there went for the interior of the animal after ambergris. To obtain the ambergris Smith had to cut a large hole in the throat, and make his way to thab part of the whale's intestines where Bach deposits aro usually found He says thai very few whales contain ib. Ho has sought for it a long time, and has rarely been rewarded. Ho obtained a deposit of between 180 and 200 pound* of ambergris, the value of- which is from L 5 to L 6 par ounce. The piece was aboub twentytwo inches square. Ambergris is only Found in the sperm whale, and is a morbid 3eorebion in tho intestinal canal of that inimal, derived from the bile. It is very -arely found in such lai'ge quantities. This md is estimated to bo of a gross value of )ver LIO,OOO. The substance is wholly ised in perfumery.
