Mr R. C. Kirk has been elected Mayor of Petone.
The Hon. Minister of Lands returned from a visit through the North Island yesterday afternoon. He states is yet he had no opportunity of considering the reported cancer in bullocks nt Invercargill, but thinks the question is one requiring looking into. Mrs Richardson, who is suffering from pleurisy, though still very weak, is recovering. The Post states that four of the city Loan Companies have been victimised to the extent of L3OO by a person using the names of the Revs. Fathers McNamara and Kenigan, in negotiating promissory notes, all of which prove to be forgeries. It is stated that accompanying the application for each advance, there was a letter apparently signed by the endorsing clergyman, and recommending applicant to the Company's consideration. The offender is believed to have left the colony some weeks ago. In Banco to-day an application was made for a new trial in the case of Dr Mirbach v. Waipawa Mail, a libel action in winch defendant was mulcted in L'2so damages. The application was on behalf of the newspaper proprietors, on the grounds of misdirection of the jury, and improper admission of documentary evidence. After argument the case was reserved for further consideration. An Order-iu-Council declares the Kermadec Islands .a portion of the Auckland land registration district. AUCKLAND, To-day. A scum of coal has been found on a property at Stanley, Waikato. The present depth of the scam is 25 feet, but the bore is not yet through. Great excitement has been caused in the district by the discovery. A representative of a Melbourne syndicate who are in treaty for the purchase of the Auckland tramways has arrived in this city. The tirsfc company of prospectors at the Puhipuhi field have refused to supply information to the press. It is generally thought that the reef extends for many miles outside the forest, and prospecting is to be carried on to the eastward of the property. The Irish Delegates Reception Committee have resolved to send home Lo'oo by the outgoing mail as a first contribution from Auckland to the Evicted Tenants' Fund. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Yesterday Mr Watters, an engineer from Greymouth, with experience in building earthquake buildings in China, examined the cathedral spire with reference to repairs to it. No report has been made yet, but it is understood some 15 feet more will have to come down. Tillet, arrested last week for robbery under arms, was committed for trial today on six charges, three of stealing horses, saddle, pack saddle, bridle and gun, three of obtaining goods from the people in Greendale district by threats and producing a gun. All the charges were admitted.
