WOOL SALES.

The opening sale of the season 1889-90 was held (the Canterbury Times says) on Nov. 7, at .10 a. in., by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, at the Christcliurch Wool and Grain Warehouse, Durham street. Mr E. G. Stavoley officiated, the catalogue comprising 45b bales of greasy and scoured wools, which met brisk competition from a good attendance of Home, foreign, and local buyers, 301 bales being sold. The bulk of the lots was sold at highly satisfactory values. The catalogue was chiefly made up of farmers' parcels of cross-bred wool of various grades, only (50 bales of this description being withdrawn; but scoured wools were not in request, and but 40 bales out of 112 found buyers, the demand for these wools being in marked contrast to the animation displayed for the greasy lots. Most of the wool offered was very heavy in condition and not overbright. For 13 bales, good half-bred, branded WF.F, from the Cnst district, we obtained 12 Ad after spirited competition, the pieces bringing 8d ; several other lots made from lOd to Hid. Prices ruled as follows : — Locks 4d, pieces 4d to Bd, halfbred 8d to 12kl, cross-bred 8d to lOkl, lonswool Bjd, "quarter -bred 9kl, farmers' merino lots B|d to lOcl, scoured super combing quarter-bred Is (J-kl. Compared with the opening rates of last year, the figures indicate a general advance of lkl on cross-bred, 3d on half-bred, and 2d per lb on merino.
