An Exciting Scene.

The Wellington Times of Friday last says : — A scene of some excitement occurred on the Queen's Wharf yesterday afternoon. A young man named Bobert Mackay, for some years in the employ of the Bank of Now Zealand ac Timaru and Ashburton, has lately returned from a visit to Australia, where he had been for his health. During the past few days he had been subject to some great mental worry, which threw him into an excited state. He premeditated a visit to Scotland, und purposed proceeding by the R.M.S. Tuinui. lie went to the wharf and engaged a boatman to take him off to that vessel, but his friends informed the boatman that they did not think him in a fit state to be put aboard owing to his mental excitement, The boat was moored to the wharf, and Mackay, finding that he could not be taken off. jumped into the water with the object of swimming to the Tainui. One of his friends called the assistance of Constable Moore, who took a boat and went in chase of Mackay, who, jretting rather excited at his capture, turned restive, and gave his captor some trouble in persuading him to return. He was taken to the Police Station, and will be medically examined this morning. Mackay is a noted athlete, and one of the best swimmers in the colony, so that thero was very little danger attached to his escapade. He is an abstainer and a non-tsmoker. The statement that he attempted to commit suicide is incorrect.
