Later. — It appears that the Bridge Hotel, at Bridgowater, destroyed by tire early Sunday morning, was owned by Mr. Tafnor, and was insured in the Colonial office for £300 ; the stock and furniture in the same office office for £200, to secure a mortgage. When they discovered the fire it was impossible to get to the pump, and no water beiugcloaer than 100 yards, very little was saved beyond the piano and a cask of beer. Mr. Tafner lost liia personal effects, aud £52 in notes. AUCKLAND, this day. The Doric's passengers have been passed by the Health Officer, and she in now berthed at the wharf. Mr McGregor, of Northern Wairoa, aged 87, went out to look for cattle on Aug. 12, and has not been heard of since. The Upper Waitaki Ferry Hotel, owned and occupied by Mr. Rosa, was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. The building and furniture, etc., were insured for £1,500. WELLINGTON, this day. An extraordinary complication has arisen here in the City Council. On Friday evening Councillor Magiunity, at tho end of the meeting, handed iv his resignation. The city solicitor has advised that there is no statutory provisions enabling a Councillor to resign, and that to have efJ feet the resignation must be formally ac- ' cepted by the Council. A special meeting ! to accept this resignation was called today, but this forenoon Cr. Maginnity in writing withdrew his resignation. Tho Council held the meeting in the afternoon, when both resignation and withdrawal were placed before it, and by a majority of ■me the Council accepted the resignation, and ordered a new election for Thorndon Ward, quite ignoring the withdrawal. It now turns out that to-day's meeting of the Council is in itself illegal, through the | proper notice not having been given. | At the Divorce Court to-day, a rule nisi was granted in the case Bizzey v. Bizzey, and another, the petition of the husband for a dissolution of marriage on the ground of the wife's adultery with co-respondent. The parties were married at Burkes Pass, Canterbury, in 1880, and subsequently resided there, and afterwards came to this i district.
