AUCKLAND.
This Day. Mr. Sheehan's address to the Thames electors appears m the Thames papera, as also Mr. Buckland's to the Franklin electors. The Energy, from Levuka, brings Fiji papers to the 16th ult. There had been disturbances at Natewa Bay amongdt the natives.' It arose through the chief of one town directing his followers to plant taro on land belonging to another. The town party, who felt themselves aggrieved, proceeded to pull up the taro which tyad been planted, and while doing so were attacked by their opponents. A sort of free fight ensued, and one man was killed by two blows from a club, and another seriously injured. The chiefs of the two towns were more to blame than their followers, who only obeyed orders. All the parties concerned have been taken into custody. At a meeting of the North New Zealand Association, the" executive committee brought up for discussion the following resolutions : — (1) That the Native Department of the Government is costly, unnecessary, and mischievous ; (2) that every possible facility should be afforded by the Legislature to natives to have their land 'surveyed *and their titles individualized ; (3) that immediately on obtaining a certificate of title, natives should De at liberty to lease, sell, or dispose of their land m any manner they wish, without the payment of anything but Court fees; (4) that an ad valorem duty should be paid by the purchaser or lessee on every first disposal of native lands ; (5) that ample reserves should be made by the Government m each district for the future benefit of the native race ; (6) that to prevent the acquisition by private individuals or companies of excessively large tracts of country, such as would be inimical to' the public welfare,, a system of progressive taxation be adopted. After a lengthy discussion the resolutions were remitted to the committee again to further report upon them. [From a Correspondent.] This Day, 12 noon. Mr. Allan McDonald has received from Opotiki, Whakatane, and Tauranga strong assurance bf support m his candidature for the East Coast. The Government have also give strong support to McDonald having been intimately concerned with Mr. Macandrew m the South Island, for over. 15 years.
