This Day. The Commissioners appointed to inquire into the charges preferred by the Surveyor General against Mr. Henry Jackson, Chief Surveyor, Wellington, have reported that the charges of insubordination and disobedience were proved. The Government have called on Jackson to resign.

It is announced that the Premier not be here to meet Governor Robinson. Ballance and Fisher have postponed visiting the West Coast till after the Governor's arrival.

A public meeting has been called to arrange for the reception of the Governor.

A message has been received by the Minister for Immigration, dated London sth March, stating that the steamer Stadt Haarlem, which sailed from Plymouth en February 15th, brings altogether 696 immigrants, destined as follows -.—For Lyttelton, 345 ; Wellington, 221 ; Port Chalmers, 130. She comes direct to Port Chalmers m the first instance, and lands there all Otago and Canterbury immigrants.

Shortly after it was shut np last night, the shop of Cohen, jeweller, between the Evening Post office, and the Empire Hotel, was observed to be on fire. The fire brigade extinguished it before the building caught, though great damage was done to the stock and fitting. The insurance amounts to about £2000 m Royal, Transatlantic, National, and Standard, but the damage will only amount to a few hundred.
