FOOTBALL.
(By Dropkick.) The attendance at the Patea-Kakaramea match on Friday afternoon last was tho “ best of the season,” amongst whom I was pleased to notice a large number of ladies, including visitors from Manutahi and Patea. A lea in- will be chosen from tho following players to meet Kakaramea on Friday afternoon next, on the Patea DomainJollie, Carey,'Symes (2), Kells, Jacorab, Gower (2), Kitson, Boyle, H. Holtham, Irwin (2), W. Paterson, Rowe, Laing, McPherson, Johnson and Barnett. All players are requested to meet at the Post Office at half past seven sharp each evening, as practice is absolutely necessary.
The following players have been chosen to represent Kakaramea against Patea, at Patea, on Friday afternoon next: — Full, S. Powdrell; three-quarters, H. Powdrell, S. Taplin and J. Paterson; halves, John Burke and C, Hawken; wings, Alf. Pearce and W. Powdrell; forwards, H. Ball, P. Eastbury, W. Hawken, 0. Hawken, W. Taplin, John 1 Jones and W. Jones. The game will commence punctually at three o’clook. Referee —Rev 0. C. Harper. The Patea tournament cup team journeyed to Kakaramea last Friday afternoon, where they met the Kakaramea cup fifteen, and a great battle ensued, resulting in a win for Kakaramea by 11 points to nil, The game was played in two spells, each of 45 minutes duration, and before ten minutes of the first spell had been played, W. Quinn—a Patea forward—left the field disabled, and the remainder of the game was contested with Patea playing one man short—admittedly a big handicap, when the teams, with their full strength, are considered about evenly matched, In the first spell H, Powdrell scored a try, which was not converted. In the second spell, John Burke scored two tries, the second being scored just at call of time and right behind the goal, and W. Powdrell converted; the first try obtained by Burke was not converted. The game throughout was a hard-fought one, and resulted somewhat as was expected—even by Patea’s strongest supporters—as the Patea team had included in its ranks two emergency men. For the winners, S. Powdrell was very sure at full, and played well; at threequarters, H. Powdrell, S. Taplin and J. Paterson were a particularly safe trio; while John Burke, at half, played a sterling game, never making a mistake all through, and getting in some magnificent runs, twice crossing his opponents’ line; he will require a lot of “ watching ” in the return match on Friday afternoon next, for if there is half a chance to score Johnny will score ; he is fast, slippery, strong and tricky, and the most danger-
ous man in the team, Alf. Pearce and W. Powdrell put in some useful work on the wings, the former being dangerously near scoring more than once. All the forwards, without exception, played well, their combination being really good, and showed evident signs of careful training; therefore, the downfall of the Patea team at their hands is only a just and encouraging reward for the many hours spent in “preparation” by them. For the losers, the backs did not shew up to their usual form, Jollie, at three-quarters, and W. Paterson, at half, being the only ones deserving of special mention, Bert. Symes was the pick of tha forwards, and worked like a Trojan throughout, playing the best and fairest forward game on the ground; Boyle, John Irwin and A, Gower also worked hard in the forwards, as did H. Gower and A, Symes on the wings. The Bev C. C. Harper acted as referee, and Messrs A. Sergeant (Patea) and G. Pearce (Kakaramea) as touch judges.
