A REVIEW OF THE WAR NEWS
The Fifth and Eighth Armies in Italy have accomplished the crossing of the Volturuo in les s time than was anticipated and, aftei repelling counter-attacks, ar© now in positions favourable to an early drive on Rome. The crossing was synchronised with a strong Allied landing on the west coast beyond th© Yolturno estuary, and the latter operation had the effect of turning th© Gcm mans right flank. Shortly after lauding the Allied forces wer© joined by units of the Fifth Army from the south. Meanwhile, the Eighth Army exerting pressure ©n the German defences ip Central Italy and on the Adriatic coast, have forced the enemy to make a general withdraw** .
Although tfie Russians had completed crossings of tli© Dnieper further jiortb, they were still on the eastern bank of the river in the Rniepej- RencJ. Th© eaptur© of Zaporozhe by tli© Red Army lias, however, necssitated a. htpsty enemy crossing, and in their panic, the Germans were slaughtered in hundreds by the Russians. The oapture and occupation of Vella Davella takes the Allied forces well up towards tli© stronger Japanese bases, and gives our troops excellent positions from which to strik© at Rabaul and New Ireland. Tokio claims that Japan is looking forward to the imminent naval clash in the South-west Pacific, but uie-
mories of the Solomons, of Midway and Wake Island suggest that To jo’s fleet will do everything i*ossibl© to avoid a show-down.
