The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1943. THE TOWN SQUARES
Tlio removal of some of the older trees from the Town Squares lias caused considerable comment and criticism throughout the town and district over the last few weeks. The replacement of these fine old trees, wh ch had, in the opinion of experts, passed their best, with evergreen flowering shrubs ha« much to commend it. The Council acted wisely and a full knowledge of the circumstances will satisfy the majority of citizens. It is not our object hero to discuss the pros and cons of the decision of the Town Fathers. But we are pleased to see the act .v© interest taken in the affairs of the Borough by the residents. It would be a tragedy if the ratepayers and householders became so apathetic that they displayed no interest in the amenities of the town. If th s wer e so, the public apathy would result in a lethargic Council, careless in the prosecut on of their stewardship. Pahiatua people have every reason to be proud of their town, afeature of which is the subject of highly complimentary comment by visitors. We speak of the garden squares, for the existence of wliici! we owe a great deal to the- early pioneers. And the present Council is not unmindful of its debt to those }>eople, but keeps an ever-watchful eye on the care and upkeep of the wonderful asset which is t-h e heritage of the present day citizens. Healthy criticism is the spur to efficient functioning of a public body, .Hid it is good to see such criticism with regard to the replacement of the trees demonstrating the very keen interest taken by the residents in their home-town.
