MANGA MUTU MEETING. Mrs Heayns presided over a fair attendance at the monthly meeting on the 13th inst. Several apologies for absence were received. Proceedings opened in the usual way with th Ode and Prayer for Peace. Tin. thought for the month was “Things don’t turn up in this world unless somebody turns them up.” The treasurer presented the balancesheet for the recent old-time dan.-e showing a considrable sum to be handed over to the Recruits Presentation Fund. It was decided also to make a donation from the Institute to tile local Recruits Presentation funds. During the afternoon, those pre-

sent wer e privileged to hear a nost j interesting address by Miss Dorset j on “China and its people,” with ! particular reference to the city of i Shanghai. Miss Dorset also spoke of j the diseases prevalent in the East j and the methods used by medical | science to combat them She showed j beautiful examples of Chinese art, j embracing needlework, tapestry, lac- j quer work, carving in wood, ivory i and jade, etc., etc. At the conelu- j sion of her address a most hearty - ote of thanks and appreciation wad J carried by acclamation. The monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Bag apron, Mrs Stokes; . Best bloom, Mrs Miller 1, Mrs Smvry 2. Brisk business wa« done at the sales table and a delectable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Sowry and O’Brien.
